Nine thousand hectares more land has been destroyed by fire this
year, when compared to the same period last year, according to the
environment ministry. Although on a more positive note, the forty
thousand hectares that has been destoyed this year is still below
the average for the last decade which is seventy six thousand. Cristina
Narbona, Minster for the environment has recently said that ninety
percent of these fires were caused by man.
According to the regional government, the recent fire in Seville and
Huelva, which destroyed twenty-seven hectares and killed two people,
“Has been the largest fire for the last ten years in Andalucía,”
said Ana Fernández from Plan Infoca, the region’s task
force against forest fires. Five days after the inferno started fire-fighting
planes and helicopters were still bombarding the zone to suffocate
the remaining hotspots and now there are twenty technicians from the
regional government’s environment agency permanently stationed
in the fire area. The blaze has practically ruined the rural economy
for many families, with the worst affected being those employed in
the production of cork especially in Berrocal were eighty per cent
of the land has been destroyed. The regional government has given
an immediate 700,000 euros to the region.
A man aged forty-two, is currently in custody charged with starting
the fire deliberately by burning plastics.
Closer to home, there were three fires in the Rio de la Miel area;
two were caused by electric cables and the other, by a spark from
the machinery being used in the motorway construction.
Insight researcher Patricia Jiménez Álvarez lives in
the area and was evacuated during the night when a fire broke out
around her home.
“At about 2am my partner Miguel was awake and saw the streetlights
flickering as if there was going to be a power cut. I was sleeping
but woke up with a start when I heard a noise, which sounded like
a strong gust of wind. I didn’t realise at the time but the
noise was in fact a spark from a fallen electric cable being set alight.
We watched from our window and saw the fire in the distance getting
bigger and nearer to us.
We were preparing to leave our home when the Guardia Civil came and
told us to evacuate. We got our cat, turned off the electricity and
left our home at about 2.30am.
We drove to the entrance at Río de La Miel where other families
in the area had gathered. There were even people from other pueblos
who had seen the fire and thought there was a fiesta going on in Almuñecar!”

Un total de cuarenta mil hectáreas han sido destruidas en
España este año a causa del fuego, nueve mil hectáreas
más que el año pasado en el mismo período de
tiempo, según el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente. Aún así,
no supera la media de la década anterior, setenta- seis mil
hectáreas por año. Cristina Narbona, ministra de Medio
Ambiente, dijo que el noventa por ciento de los fuegos fueron causados
por el hombre.
Según el Gobierno regional, el reciente fuego acaecido en Sevilla
y Huelva, el cual destruyó veinte-siete mil hectáreas
y mató a dos personas, “ha sido el fuego más grande
de los últimos diez años en Andalucía”,
afirmó Ana Fernández de Infoca, fuerza regional que
lucha contra los incendios forestales. Cinco días después
de que comenzara el infierno, helicópteros y aviones estuvieron
bombardeando la zona para sofocar los puntos conflictivos que permanecían
y ahora hay veinte técnicos de la agencia regional de Medio
Ambiente permanentemente estacionados en la zona afectada. El fuego
ha arruinado prácticamente la economía rural de muchas
familias, afectando en peor medida a aquéllos que se dedicaban
a la producción del corcho, especialmente en Berrocal, donde
el ochenta por ciento de la tierra ha sido arrasada. El Gobierno regional
ha entregado de inmediato 700.000 Euros a la región.
Por el momento, se ha declarado prisión incondicional para
un hombre de 42 años por haber comenzado el fuego deliberadamente
con la quema de plásticos.
Más cerca de casa, ha habido tres fuegos en la zona de Río
de la Miel, dos de ellos causados por cables eléctricos y otro,
debido a una chispa en los trabajos de construcción de la autovía.
Patricia Jiménez Álvarez, redactora de Insight vive
en la zona y fue evacuada durante la noche cuando un fuego se inició
cerca de su casa.
“Sobre las 2 de la mañana mi pareja se despertó
y vio cómo la luz de la bombilla de la farola iba y venía
como si fuera a haber un corte de luz. Yo estaba durmiendo pero me
despertó el ruido del viento, que tiró algo. Entonces
vimos desde nuestra ventana el fuego en la distancia, el cual iba
acercándose y creciendo.
Estábamos ya saliendo de la casa cuando vino la Guardia Civil
a decirnos que nos fuéramos. Cojimos a Candela, la gata, cerramos
la llave de la luz y dejamos la casa sobre las 2.30.
Condujimos hasta la entrada del Río de la Miel, donde estaban
muchas otras familias de la zona. También vino gente de otros
pueblos, que al ver la luz desde la carretera pensaron que igual era
la feria de Almuñécar”.
